This book/CD set by Ugandan folklorist, musician, and professor W. Moses Serwadda contains six complete Ugandan stories told in English, with transcriptions and recordings of 13 songs in the Luganda language to act as interludes and illustrations. It introduces the African storytelling tradition in a captivating and hands-on way to pre-readers, or allows older students to learn and perform the songs in the Lugandan language – in both cases, there is both an aural text component, and the chance to sing along – or to perform the interlude songs independently.

Product Description

W. Moses Serwadda is a Ugandan musician, folklore specialist, and professor in Uganda, and this set contains stories from his personal and family collection. Stories and songs are an important part of teaching children in Africa, and this Book/CD set gives an idea of the richness of the story tradition in Zimbabwe with six complete folktales narrated in English and their songs in the Luganda language. Songs are part of the stories, sung on the CD by adults and children, and simple enough to be part of the lessons. A further 7 songs extend the repertoire and the students’ experience of these enchanting songs. Transcriptions are clear, and learning and performance accessible to all elementary teachers and even pre-reading classes, while advanced music classes and older children can carry the performances further yet. Pronunciation is carefully provided in audio and transcriptions. This collection is terrific way to enrich the aural storytelling part of classes using authentic material, while fostering children’s participation in telling the tales.
